Chapter 12

Chase had always loved working at the plant on the weekend when the place was dim and silent and no one else was there, but he was happy when Phoebe came in at midafternoon, sweaty from a ride on her new bicycle, ridiculously sexy in her latex shorts. He poured a glass of water for her and watched her chug it down, the water running all over, including down the front of her T-shirt.

Employee. Employee. She’s an employee. He had to remember that.

But it was easy to forget, possibly because none of his other employees looked like she did. Or told him he was overbearing. Or worked out Indiegogo campaigns for him.

“When you’re ready, chère, tell me about what you’ve been working on,” he said, pulling out the pages and laying them on the desk.

Phoebe put down the empty glass with a satisfied sigh.

“You looked at that stuff? What do you think? I made some lists. Well, I made some calls, too. Do you have anything to eat in here?”

He took a jar of mixed nuts from his bottom desk drawer and handed it over.

“That’s it for food,” he said, “unless you want to see if there’s anything getting stale in the breakroom.”

Phoebe grinned, opening the can. “No, thanks. The nuts will hold me for now. Yum, cashews.” She picked out some cashews and then flipped open her messenger bag and pulled out her laptop. “Let me show you what I did.” She plunked the laptop in the center of his desk and dragged her chair around it to sit close to him.

He exhaled. She was practically on top of him, her leg nudging his. When she leaned forward, her arm grazed his. Her skin was moist and rosy from the exercise. Her hair was tangled, and a damp strand clung to her neck. He wanted to touch that strand, curl it around his fingers, nudge her back—

Employee. She was an employee. He took a deep breath. Grabbed the edge of his desk instead.

“Sorry,” she said, glancing at him. “I probably stink.”

“You ever been in a locker room with a bunch of football players who’ve been sweating their asses off for a few hours in ninety-degree heat wearing fifteen or twenty pounds of gear? I’ve smelled worse.”

Phoebe grinned. “I won’t worry then. Okay, where do you want to start?”

“Show me the road race, because that’s something we actually have to do by the end of the week.”

Phoebe nodded. “Kristin already got started with this, so I added what I could. For starters, publicity. We’ve got the media covered, local newspaper, radio, all that, and national automotive magazines.”

“National?”

Phoebe nodded. “The outlets that are coming to cover the rally are in this column,” she said, pointing.

He leaned forward, looking harder. “Seriously.”

Phoebe nodded again, grinning, sharing his disbelief. “Seriously. I know. Let me tell you, the things I’ve learned in the past week, you would not believe. Okay. Continuing. Social media.”

“We’re doing social media for this thing?”

“Absolutely. All the usual suspects, with one wild card.
